Did you know that Leuven is the birthplace of the Big Bang Theory? Professor Georges Lemaître produced his cosmogonic hypothesis on the primaeval atom in 1931 and turned the world upside down It rocked the world of science to its core. That makes Leuven the perfect place for a city festival celebrating the cosmos and its origins.
So, get ready, because KU[N]ST Leuven is organising a large-scale cultural city festival, where the astonishment of the cosmos will be explored from every angle. We’ll be igniting our very own world-shattering cultural Big Bang in the autumn of 2021. BANG! sucks you into a sensory journey through how the Big Bang continues to inspire art and science today. Enjoy music, exhibitions, events, and everything that makes life BANG! exciting!
In the context of that festival, we invite you to walk in the footsteps of Georges Lemaître
During this walk you will be introduced to the work and life of Georges Lemaître, the creator of the “big bang” theory.
The man who, according to Albert Einstein, wrote down “the most beautiful and satisfactory explanation of the origin of the universe” was a Francophone priest and professor at our university.
During this walk you will pass the places where he lived and worked. We will explain the scientific importance of his ideas and the difficulties he encountered in getting them accepted.
We will dwell on the sometimes complex relationship between faith and science and also get to know the man behind the scientist.
After this tour you will look at both Leuven and the stars in the sky with new eyes.
